In the film, Truman lives inside a carefully constructed reality. Everything around him—his fears, routines, and beliefs—has been programmed to keep him within the boundaries of the world created.
 
Symbolically, the movie suggests that many people live similarly:
Conditioned by society, culture, media, fear and habit.
Identified with roles and labels.
Mistaking the "set" for reality itself.
The most powerful moment occurs when Truman sails to the horizon and hits the painted sky. The limit he thought was reality turns out to be a wall.
 
The scene can be interpreted as a metaphor for awakening/ escaping the matrix. The wall represents the limits of human conditioning. The courage to walk through the exit door represents choosing truth.
